Frequently Asked Questions

When should I schedule a session?

It’s best to hire me soon as you know I’m the photographer for you. Newborns often book up 3-4 months in advance since I only accept a limited number per month to allow flexibility in scheduling once baby makes his or her arrival; and other sessions are scheduled once a week at sunrise, sunset, or on a weekend date one time a month. The fall books up EXTREMELY quickly and I only photograph family sessions in studio from December to February.

How long does the process take?

The entire custom portrait process may take up to several months from first booking to having your final product in your hands. Please see below for a timeline:

  • Session planning may take 3 weeks to several months (especially for a newborn session) for a consultation, location-scouting, and wardrobe selection.
  • Session itself may have to be rearranged due to inclement weather if outside or if there’s a sick kiddo.
  • A Reveal and Ordering Appointment takes place between 2-3 weeks after your session.
  • Design work and revisions can take another 1-2 weeks; more if multiple revisions occur.
  • Product delivery for prints will be ready in 1-2 weeks after the final approval. Albums take 4-5 weeks depending on the customizations.

How much does a session cost?

Session retainers begin at $150 and go up to $390, depending on the session. This covers a pre-session consultation, the session itself, and an ordering appointment where you can view the edited images from the session. Some sessions also include hair and makeup, an assistant, and travel. Please see the Maternity and Newborn Magazine for more information.

What is a session retainer?

The session retainer is what you pay to the studio to reserve the date and time for the photographer to perform services for you. Because April only accepts a limited number of clients in any given month, she may have to turn others away for the time around your scheduled session. This retainer must be paid within 24 hours of speaking to the studio about a date, along with the contract, to be sure we don’t book someone else during your requested time.

What forms of payment do you accept?

Paypal or Credit Card will be how you pay your session retainer at the end of your digital contract.

I will then invoice you for any remaining session fees if there are any, also through Paypal or Credit Card. Products at your ordering appointment can be paid by either cash, check, credit card, or Paypal.

Where will we hold the session? Do you choose the location or do I?

I am flexible on location. For newborn studio sessions, I do have dedicated space for lighting and all of my props, backdrops, etc are here. It’s definitely too much to pack everything into a car, but I am able to travel to you for an additional fee as long as there is ample space and ceiling height for me to set up. We will just have to do really great collaborating during your pre-session consultation so I can pack the most appropriate props to bring with me, rather than everything I own. I can also travel to you for no additional fee if you’d like a lifestyle session.
For family sessions, I love finding meaningful places to you and your family. I can certainly offer suggestions, but part of our collaboration is discussing what you and your family like to do together, and your favorite local destination spots. If you’re completely at a loss, though, I can pick the location based on the look and feel of the images you’re after during our consultation.
I also have dedicated space on the second floor of my home for headshots and contemporary portraiture, or even lifestyle "styled" sessions using a bed or sofa setup.

What should I wear to the session? How can I pick the right clothing?

I know this is a stressful part of getting the images just the way you envision them when you’re spending a lot of money on custom portraits. I am here to guide you, so don’t worry! The easiest answer is to plan 2-3 colors plus a neutral (black, jeans, white, grey, khaki and even navy are all neutrals these days). Keep patterns to a minimum. One outfit can be a pattern or multi-color and use that as your jumping off point for other colors. And a warning about matching outfits with everyone in jeans or khaki pants and matching white shirts: this may make things easier to plan, but it also is the quickest way to make your images look like they’re dated from the 80’s and 90s, so let’s not do that. I’m all for timeless and letting your family’s personality shine through.
For contemporary portraits and headshots, I have a separate style guide to share with you upon booking. :)

Do you provide digital files?

I provide the coordinating digital file of every print you purchase during your in-person ordering appointment.

What size can I print the images?

It depends on which size print you purchase. You receive the size file of the print you purchase.

Do you offer holiday cards and birth announcements?

I do offer holiday cards and birth announcements.

Where do you get your business cards, thank you cards, announcements, canvases, wall art, etc printed?

I order my products from a professional lab that does not cater to the general public.

Do you photograph weddings, birthday parties, or family reunions?

At this time, I do not do event photography. My specialization is in capturing moments of you with your loved ones. It’s what I’ve spent my time working on and perfecting, and the sessions you’ve requested are best left to those who have spent their time perfecting their craft for that particular setting. I am also rarely available on the weekends when most of these types of sessions tend to occur.

Do you offer mentorships?

Due to a few contract restrictions with some mentors I have worked with, I am not able to offer mentorships at this time.

How did you get started?

I began photographing landscapes and flowers at a young age. The macro setting on my first 35 mm point and shoot camera was my favorite by far. Once I became a mom, I found a whole new appreciation for being able to get the shot with my camera. I became obsessed with light and shadow, and capturing my crazy toddler boys doing something before they moved on to the next thing five seconds later. I purchased my first DSLR in 2005 and started my business in 2013 focusing on newborns and families.

Image Usage Policy

USE OF IMAGES

In 1976, the Federal Government passed the Copyright Law to prevent the copying of protected materials, including books, sheet music, and professionally-created photographs.

The portraits you have commissioned us to create are fro one fo the most celebrated custom boutiques in the industry. April Peebles Photography invests heavily in education and training in order to provide the highest level of quality photography. As such, duplicating, scanning, or copying images creates a severe loss of color, clarity, and permanence in the portraits. Since such losses reflect poorly on the reputation of our professional work, April Peebles Photography has reserved the copyright on each portrait we create. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation in helping us continue to provide the highest levels of quality and integrity for which we are known.

THE US COPYRIGHT ACT

The Copyright Act protects photographers by giving the author of the photograph the exclusive right to reproduce your photographs, including the right to control the production of copies. It is illegal to copy or reproduce these photographs elsewhere without our express written permission. Copyright infringement is a felony and is punishable by civil and criminal penalties. The law also specifies damages at $150,000 per infringement.
